Academic anxiety is ‘Normal’

A leading professor has warned over against much hight concerned around academics, saying anxiety during a degree is ‘normal’

“A bit of anxiety is normal, all students should feel a little bit anxious when it comes to taking an exam. Actually, a bit of anxiety is what you need to perform well of something”, Dr Helen said in 14th February 2020.

Research shows that 82% of students suffer from stress and anxiety, released by Unihealth in 2017.

What is academic anxiety?

Academic anxiety always along with depressed, confused and stressful emotion especially when every deadline is coming. Students may worry about they academic performance about whether they can pass the examination or get a good mark.

Normally academic anxiety is a general thing for students, and normal level is okay for students, but excessive anxiety should be taken seriously because it can affect your daily life.

What we can do for anxiety?

Fortunately,there are some good advices for us to tackle with academic anxiety from Dr Helen St Clair-Thompson,a psychology senior lecturer in Newcastle University.

Understanding it is normal thing that is important for us, because almost every student may face the same problems. So, no matter what the exact problems are, seeking support or advice from student wellbeing service, student union in university is a good way for us. Because it’s free and convenient for us~

Besides, if the level of anxiety that is really difficult and that having impact on students’ ability to study, then talking to tutor is a good way, because tutor will help them to tackle with that.

“Recognizing when it goes from that being normal level to something which is a little bit too much in which case of students have to seek some help with something, the help that mainly would be thinking about what available in the university, but also students can get help from their GP.”
