Research shows that engaging in visual arts, in particular photography, has plenty of benefits for people’s mental wellbeing, for example, reducing anxiety, releasing pressure and helping calm mood disturbances.
Photography cultivates people’s thought, inspiration, awareness, and concentration. Being a creative photographer, or being someone that enjoys photos, both can lift one’s spirit.
Especially engaging in a photography community group enables people get more opportunities to capture beautiful moments while also working with others, creating a sense of belonging and building friendships.
Headliners as local charity in Newcastle has launched a new project, Tynesiders Project, aiming to help refugees in the 16-25 age group to engage in creative arts, as well as to know more about British culture and improve their mental wellbeing.
Jacob Flockhart is a project worker in Headliners and is leading the Tynesiders photography project. Currently, he is teaching photography on project, helping the refugees to understand the technical aspects of using a camera and how to frame pictures – as well as lots more.

Jacob Flockhart said, ‘Engaging in photography is a creative and expressive activity. And Learning photography is a kind of way to force people to observe life in more granular way, which enables people to find better things around their life. Through learning photography means people can experience more joyful.’

People’s photography can reflect their own experience, also represent their attitude towards life.
“I really enjoy the class, I got to explore some different parts of British culture and make new friends. This project is good for me,” said Omid Khani, a student in the Tynesides Project.
Students experience about photography

Taking photos could lift my spirits when I was upset.
Cynthia, an Urbanism course student in the University of Sydney.

For me, I am not a crazy fan of Photography, but taking photos is always a way for me to relax my mind. Everytime when I found beautiful views or interesting things, I would like to use my camera to take a photo, sending them either to my family or close friends, sharing some nice photos just easily makes me feel happier. Moreover, it creates a record of positive memories, which enables me to look back on them and reminisce, which its always comforting; especially if I’m feeling down, as I can look back and be reminded of all of the good memories.
